Recent News on the Coronavirus / Les Récentes Nouvelles concernant le Coronavirus
January 27, 2020

About the recent news on the coronavirus — I have been listening to the concerns of the people in my riding of Markham—Thornhill.

Our government’s absolute priority is the health and safety of Canadians — and we have multiple systems in place to prepare for, detect, and respond to the spread of serious infectious diseases into and within Canada. Our Public Health Agency is in close contact with the World Health Organization and our international partners, and our Chief Public Health Officer is in close contact with her provincial and territorial counterparts.

The two people affected in Canada have been isolated and are currently in care. Our doctors, nurses, and all healthcare professionals are prepared and ready to treat this virus.

As we celebrate Lunar New Year, many Canadians are travelling to be with their loved ones. Precautions are being taken at the Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto airports to identify any travellers who may be ill and raise awareness amongst passengers. If you are travelling to or from China, I invite you to consult the latest Travel Health Notice, which includes information for travellers: www.canada.ca/coronavirus.

We are working with our local, provincial and federal colleagues on this evolving issue, including Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Health Minister Patty Hajdu — and we will continue to provide Canadians with new information as we know it.
