Empowering Indigenous Communities Through Global Trade and Economic Cooperation
November 19, 2024
The Indigenous Peoples Economic and Trade Cooperation Arrangement (IPETCA) was created to enhance Indigenous peoples’ participation in trade and economic development. It focuses on cooperation activities such as sharing best practices, identifying barriers, and promoting Indigenous cultural heritage and knowledge.
The members of IPECTA includes Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Chinese Taipei, and the USA as observer.
In Canada, IPETCA is Indigenous led by Assembly of First Nations (AFN), the Métis National Council, and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) and supported by Government. It is projected that the full participation of Indigenous businesses can grow Canada’s GDP by more than $26 billion!
Here at APEC, we listened to the IPECTA members on the importance of including Indigenous voices in economic discussions, and their efforts to promote greater cooperation to increase Indigenous peoples’ participation in the economy and trade across the APEC region!
