A message from the Hon. Mary Ng

Women are trailblazers, leaders, and so much more. During International Women’s Month, it is important that we take the opportunity to recognize the many contributions of women in Canada. In addition to celebrating Canadian women and their accomplishments, we must also acknowledge the barriers and obstacles that women have faced, and continue to face, in their pursuit of equality and justice.

Since 2015, our government has worked hard to remove the systemic barriers women face in reaching their goals. On International Women’s Day, I was thrilled to announce the second round of recipients of funding under the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy (WES). This funding is a game changer for so many women across Canada. Since it’s launch, our WES has helped 10,000 women start new businesses and more than 12,000 women grow their existing ones.

Helping talented women start-up and scale-up their business ventures is a win for equality and the economy. That’s good news for Canada, because if you look around, you will find that talented women are everywhere. They’re making a difference in business, science, engineering, the arts, and so many other fields.

Happy International Women’s Month to the incredible women and girls who make our communities, our economy, and our country what it is. Keeping dreaming big, Canada needs you.

Investing in our public health care system

Whether we’re going to see a doctor for a sore throat or a more serious health complication, we depend on our health care system to be there for us when we need it.

We reached an agreement with the government of Ontario on a shared health care plan that will invest $8.41 billion in new funds, and $776 million immediately to address urgent needs in hospitals across Ontario. We know money alone won’t fix our health care system, so we aren’t just writing the province a blank cheque; we are also working with them to:

  • Make sure Ontarians have access to family doctors and nurse practitioners.

  • Support our health care workers and reduce backlogs in the system.

  • Ensure your health information is available to you and your health providers— so you get the best quality care possible.

Growing Canada’s trade relationships

As the Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, my work abroad has a huge impact on people’s lives here in Canada.

During our first ever #TeamCanada trade mission last month, I engaged with our international partners and business leaders on Canada’s priorities in strengthening our trade and investment relationships in the Indo-Pacific region.

When we grow Canada’s trade relationships, we give Canadian businesses access to new markets, increase the resiliency of our economy, and so much more!

Supporting victims of the Türkiye/Syria earthquake

Our government stands with the victims of this horrific natural disaster and is providing an additional $20 million in humanitarian assistance to help support emergency medical services and provide shelter, food, and other essential goods.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Canadian people, our promise to match donations made through the Canadian Red Cross up to $10 million was reached on February 12th.

As of February 24th, we began matching donations to the Humanitarian Coalition and its members up to $10 million. You can make a donation here.

Standing with Ukraine

It has been one year since Russia launched their brutal and unjustifiable invasion against Ukraine. As Ukrainians bravely defend their country and our shared values of peace, democracy, and human rights, our government remains steadfast in our support of the people of Ukraine, and in our efforts to hold Russia accountable.
