The Honourable Mary Ng was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Markham—Thornhill in 2017. She has since been re-elected two times. In 2018, she was appointed to Cabinet and currently serves as the Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development. Minister Ng previously served as the Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development and as the Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion.
As Canada’s Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, she has positioned Canada for long-term success in the global marketplace by securing trade deals and launching negotiations with key partners for the future. As part of her strategic focus on the Indo-Pacific, she led the efforts to establish a Strategic Partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), launched FTA negotiations with Indonesia and ASEAN, and successfully concluded the U.K.’s accession into the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). In 2024, Minister Ng reiterated Canada’s steadfast commitment to Ukraine by passing the modernized Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA). She also co-leads the Canada-USA engagement strategy.
More importantly, Minister Ng promotes Canadian exports around the globe and champions the growth of Canadian businesses by fostering strong international partnerships that attract investments and drive innovation to create middle-class jobs at home. She has also been a staunch supporter for women and racialized people. Through the successful implementation of the Women’s Entrepreneurship Strategy, the deployment of the Black Entrepreneurship Program, and the launch of the 2SLGBTQI+ Entrepreneurship Program, she has led the establishment of national networks of support and expanded access to capital by hundreds of millions of dollars.
With 20 years of experience in education, women’s leadership, job creation, and entrepreneurship, Minister Ng is a dedicated community leader who strongly believes in the power of public service. Her experience working for the Ontario Public Service, TMU (formerly Ryerson University), and the Ontario Ministry of Education led to her being recognized as one of Canada’s top-performing public sector leaders. She later served as Director of Public Appointments for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Minister Ng immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong at a young age and grew up in her family’s small business. She knows firsthand the challenges, and the opportunities, that many new Canadians experience. She is dedicated to being a powerful advocate for middle-class families in Markham-Thornhill and works tirelessly to ensure fairness and opportunity throughout our diverse community, and our country.
